WAISMAN CENTER
University of Wisconsin
Madison, WI
Addition and Remodel
87,000 GSF - Addition
20,000 GSF - Remodel
$20M
The purpose of the project was to add five new floors of laboratory, office, and conferencing space to the Waisman Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus. Program elements include a GMP laboratory, gene therapy research laboratories, a conference center, an Early Childhood Center, and an Integrated Neuroimaging Center.
A connecting bridge provides direct access between the addition and related research activities in the existing building. The junction between the new and old structures at the ground floor forms the Center’s new main entry. A public interactive first floor provides new lobby spaces, new elevators, and direct client access to programs in the existing building and annex. Intermediate floors between the main floor and the labs contain the mechanical functions and the conference center.
The design of the addition incorporated contextual elements to create a symbiosis with the existing masonry clad tower while invoking a new vocabulary using glass curtain wall and a wraparound canopy.
The AIA Wisconsin has recognized the University of Wisconsin Waisman Center Addition and Remodel with the Design Merit Award.
